Jock’s rise to the upper echelons of Melbourne’s premium real estate market was always just a matter of time. Born and bred in rural NSW, he has gone about building a career based on the old fashioned values of playing with a straight bat, and doing what he says he’ll do.

And, as a result, with over 25 years of experience, he today resides over one of the most high quality, long lasting client networks in the business. Educated at Geelong Grammar School, Jock has a particularly strong international and ex-pat network, and he regularly commits to travelling overseas to meet with clients and provide meaningful dialogue regarding their requirements and the properties he represents. That big picture approach means Jock understands that today’s real estate marketing needs to go beyond the usual boundaries. He is a big proponent of creating desirable and agile digital and online campaigns, which allow his properties to be seen and understood by buyers anywhere in the world, any time of the day at a push of a button. He has also has enjoyed considerable success with his commitment to advertising in international publications, from where he has an uncanny ability to flush out interest from unexpected quarters and create the kind of commitment and competition that can drive extraordinary results. His creative thinking birthed the idea of the “Private Auction” which is fast becoming a more familiar sale process for those who wish to be less public! Jock’s background has ensured he has a healthy interest in rural properties as well. He is widely sought after for his advice and representation by owners of everything from boutique holdings in Melbourne’s premium lifestyle markets to immense pastoral holdings. Jock is one of the founding directors of Abercromby’s and, along with his partners, maintains a strong commitment to keeping the company smaller in size, but bigger in values.

When Abercromby’s sounded out Jack as senior sales executive and auctioneer he had already been working successfully in real estate for six years in a franchise operation.

He’d been fast-tracked into partnership and was on a trajectory that would make many a young agent happy. But he felt a level of disquiet, a lack of satisfaction.

Jack immediately liked the possibilities he saw at Abercromby’s with its smaller team and discreet sales methods focused on the high-end market, ‘I saw a really good culture, with an expectation of a one-on-one relationship between vendor and agent. The truth is, when you get to know your vendor you have skin in the game. You try harder. You care. And when you get a good result for someone you care about it maximizes job satisfaction. Simple as that.’ The young man is intuitive; he got the Abercromby’s philosophy in that first interview.

At a fiercely contested title, where all the young guns had gathered to the fray, Jack won the statewide REIV Novice Auctioneer Competition in 2016, and is now an accredited Auctioneer Coach himself, and a joy to watch on any given Saturday.

Having grown up on the Surfcoast and gone to school at The Geelong College he has an approachable personality that belies the inner drive that has enabled him to excel. Leaving school, he went to live in Florida, working on a superyacht and travelling throughout the Bahama’s. It was ‘Educational,’ he says, mixing with people who know the world inside out. But home eventually called, as it does. So he came back to Australia and set up in business at Queenscliff selling boats. After selling that business he entered real estate.

When Jack’s not deftly waving the auctioneer’s hammer in Stonnington’s élite streets he can be found hunched over a bowl of Pho in Richmond where he lives, or working out at the gym, or out on the water, or down at Kardinia Park watching his beloved Cats.

Kharla has become a true child of Stonnington, she knows its streets, cafes, and culture like no other, and has been a virtuoso in its distinctive real estate market since the early 2000s.

She lives here, and feels privileged to do so. Whether it’s coffee at Officine, Gilson for brunch, Bistro Gitan for dinner or Entrecote for a Friday evening drink with friends, Kharla has her ear to the ground in all the right places and knows the neighbourhood like few others.

Kharla likes to get to know her clients, because she abides by a personal ethos that the needs of a buyer must be fully understood and observed. ‘That’s key to the industry,’ she says. ‘Find out exactly what your client wants, and locate, or create, the property that matches their pre-conceived blueprint.’

Importantly, and unlike the industry norm, where a senior agent lists a development and subsequently buyer enquiry is managed by juniors, Kharla not only lists new developments, she’s the first point of call for all prospective purchasers. Her client’s are glad to be dealing with the woman in charge.

Her comprehensive experience in the industry means she is able to offer assistance with floor plans, design reviews, and sales and marketing strategy. A true renaissance woman who, ‘Can’t describe the exhilaration of making a sale happen. The best moment in any development’s campaign is selling the very last dwelling. In that moment you know your job is done and, secondly, you can't help but feel you shall have a client in that developer for life.’

Outside work Kharla’s passions include... well... worky stuff: architecture, interior design, outdoor design, travel... she’s always honing her skills. She’s also a keen runner but, to be honest, is probably thinking of ways to maximize a client’s outcome even while burning up the Tan.

Embracing the Abercromby’s ethos, Kharla says, ‘I love it – BE TRUE – authenticity, teamwork, clients’ needs and desires are the priority. We listen to how the client wants the campaign to run and ensure outcomes are achieved.’

Kharla’s passion is a natural energy that we at Abercromby’s are all trying to live up to.

The moment you meet Sarah you realize you’ve encountered one of life’s ebullient optimists, inquisitive, eager to embrace a task, and immediately thinking ahead to a result.

It makes total sense when you find out she’s a country girl, who grew up in Mansfield... plain speaking, no hidden agenda.

Her rare facility for person-to-person engagement enabled her to enter the industry young and begin working with an experienced team of agents in Sales Administration, where she mastered the important groundwork. She loved the stories and histories behind the properties, and she loved connecting with clients, so she knew immediately real estate wasn’t a job... it was a career. Her knowledge grew and she was soon selling and leasing a variety of property in Mansfield and surrounds.

Eventually Sarah’s drive and distinction outgrew her hometown and she needed a bigger challenge. So here she is in the Blue-Ribbon postcodes. The core principles of salesmanship are the same, she says, but local knowledge is invaluable. Working with Sam Goddard as her mentor Sarah knows she will be learning from the best. She immediately recognized Abercromby’s AIM TRUE ethos as similar to how things get done in a country town. ‘In the country you’re going to meet your clients again, everywhere you go. They’re a living history of how you’ve behaved. That makes for a healthy accountability. Abercromby’s business is largely word-of-mouth, so the same principle applies; you’re a string of happy clients or you’re no one. I like that.’

Nicole is strongly passionate about real estate. Having lived in Melbourne since the early 2000s, she’s worked in the industry since 2007, specializing in property management and gaining her Certificate IV in property services. After more than a decade she knows the game forward and backwards, and says caring for every client’s property as if it was her own is key.

Nicole grew up in Gippsland and northern Victoria on The Murray River at Echuca, where she excelled at outdoor activities. It almost seems a natural progression then that after completing her VCE she became a horse-riding instructor in Michigan USA, then worked in the ski-fields at Whistler in Canada and again at Mount Hotham.

She still occasionally succumbs to the call of the wild and heads for the mountains and the trails. But these days she is delighted to be learning Abercromby’s methodology, which, she says, fits her open, candid, country manner. ‘Abercromby’s operates with community-based values. A recognition that every person you deal with today you will meet again tomorrow. It’s an approach to relationships I understand from growing up in a small community. So I feel very at home in the Abercromby’s family.’

You can take the girl out of the country, but you can’t take the country out of the girl. Which explains why Nicole is still active in the outdoors in her leisure time, snowboarding and wakeboarding, and travelling and photographing nature.

Andrew spent the first half of his working life as a frontline mechanic with the RAF, ensuring Britain’s Eurofighter Typhoons were ready to engage Russian Sukhois in the stratosphere. Born in Manchester and based in Scotland, he says when he came to Australia he was simply looking for a change in weather.

What he found was a lifestyle, people and attitude he fell in love with. He never went home. He’s been a resident for six years now, becoming a citizen in 2017 and claims to have Bradman’s batting average tattooed in a secret place. We haven’t verified that, but can affirm he’s a super-enthusiastic Australian and Melburnian. Andrew is a fitness enthusiast, a runner of marathons, and a recent convert from Manchester City to The Western Bulldogs. (He hopped that bandwagon just in time.) With a Business Degree from The University of Central Lancashire and several years of experience as a rental and leasing consultant in St Kilda, Andrew’s not only educated in international concepts of rental markets, he’s particularly conversant with the local rental and leasing scene. ‘I love working with people and solving their problems. I see my position as a liaison between owner and tenant. The big challenge in property management is striking that balance between making sure a tenant has exactly what he or she needs and making a property pay its owner what it owes. Ideally, if you’re doing your job, you get Christmas cards from both owner and tenant.’

Property Management Administration Manager

Business: +61 3 9864 5353

Having achieved a First Class Diploma in Events Management, Laura worked in London for some years in administration and hospitality, but found herself somewhat disgruntled at the lack of continuing person-on-person interaction that industry and career entailed. She wanted to work with people, get to know them, solve problems for them.

At the end of a working day she wanted to know she’d given meaningful service to someone. Laura’s father is a real estate agent in Coffs Harbour, and having worked with him for some time she remembered how enthused he was by achieving good results for his clients. Given that, Laura was always coming home to real estate, and has embraced Abercromby’s client-first approach and boutique nature with gusto, and recently aced her Agents Representative Course.

Growing up in Coffs Harbour on the NSW mid-north coast, Laura enjoys the outdoors; travelling, being by the beach, and nature walks. She also enjoys trying new cafes when she can and relaxing with family and friends.

She appreciates Property Management for its ongoing relationships. And recognizes the measure of success as managing both landlords and clients through multiple properties. An ongoing relationship is necessarily a happy one.

Laura sees herself as an intermediary between landlord and tenant, a dealmaker and peacekeeper, a role, she says, that needs not only the sharpest knowledge of market trends, but a good deal of diplomatic skill as well.

And having worked among the late night revelers in the glittering nightlights of London, she is perfectly tuned for the role of diplomacy.

A self confessed perfectionist, Sam’s attention to detail is just one of her strengths as the Abercromby’s Sale Secretary which has seen her gel perfectly within the team and deliver uncompromising results.

Sam has a wealth of experience within both real estate and sales, which she draws on regularly. Additionally the time she spent as a legal secretary has aided her in forming a strong foundation in the more technical aspects of the industry. Sam’s only drawback is that she’s a keen Collingwood supporter, though we try not to hold that against her. Aside from the football, she loves to venture out and try new restaurants and cafes whenever she can.

More than a decade at Abercromby’s, coupled with 25 years of working with Jock Langley and Tim Derham, makes Tori one of the most experienced heads in the office.

These years of service are thanks to the importance she places on loyalty. This experience has led her to be the ‘go to’ person in the office with her capacity to respond to a wide range of requests and handle the diverse array of issues that inevitably arise during the course of each busy day. As the individual with the responsibility for ensuring the smooth, seamless running of the business from an internal perspective, her cool head and seamless running of the office breathes confidence and assuredness through the whole business. Tori genuinely loves the Abercromby’s office and knows it back to front, but beyond the office she loves a trip to Queensland with her family or a hit of tennis or golf.

Growing up on New Zealand’s beautiful North Island Alysia attended Tauranga Girls College where she passed her final year with flying colours before enrolling in police college and becoming one of New Zealand’s finest.

But, as with so many young New Zealanders, she wanted to experience the wider world, and the glittering Land of Oz, two hours across the water, beckoned. Alysia moved across the ditch in 2016 working in banks before becoming a Personal Assistant to a surgeon. From her time in banking she recognized real estate as an exciting industry with big deals being made and serious capital flowing from them. She wanted in, but didn’t want to be an anonymous cog in a suburban franchise. She was drawn to Abercromby’s as a boutique agency with a familial ethos that would allow her a full view of how real estate works.

She loves to travel, and in particular, to hike (Though, of course, she would say “tramp”). Back home she hiked/tramped every major trail in New Zealand and hopes to eventually do the same here in Australia.

At Abercromby’s we’re pleased to welcome her to the team. With the phalanx of phone marketers and the droves of door-to-door salesman abroad in downtown Melbourne these days, what could be better than having an ex NZ policewoman front of house?
